They are apparently calling the next release Windows 10.

The exact same thing. It's a marketing numbers game. NVidia skipped the 800 series in part so that they could equate the GeForce 900 series with the AMD Radeon R9 series. Microsoft is skipping Windows 9 so that they can equate Windows 10.x with OSX 10.x.

NVidia did the same thing when they more or less completely skipped the GeForce 300 series. Intel currently does something similar with their LGA-2011 series microprocessors.

In the minds of idiot consumers, bigger numbers always equal better.

I think microsoft is skipping windows 9 because 7 8 9. ;P
