I am only asking this question as I had just been given a laptop from my uncle who had bought the laptop from India with parts from Korea and I was thinking that because there is a mere 4GB of RAM installed and space for more...would it be okay if I got one stick of 1600MHz Korean RAM (of a company not known in Canada) with something for example Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz RAM?

I'm looking to upgrade as 4GB is not quite enough to suit my needs.

Solution

The CAS latency of those two might not be the same so you would have things all over the place. E.G: one 4GB cas 9 stick with a CAS 12 Latency stick. You only perform as your weakest link so your cas 12 Latency will slow your CAS 9 latency.( 9 is faster than 12). So yes it is bad as it hinder the performance.

What if I made sure of the latency on both sticks? If latency, frequencies and voltages were the same would there be any harm?

Not really no. But I would just get two of the same stick to be on the safe side.
