Is my 8800 GT broken?

Hi

In the recent past my computer freeze and Artifacting on the monitor in normal mode. In safe mode all works well, no freeze or artifacting. I have tried to reinstall to the newest driver, even installed a old driver but it still occur. The time from startup to the freeze points depends on how cold it is. I have managed to monitor the temp on the graphic card before the freeze, and the freezing temp was only 64 celsius ( 147 Fahrenheit). It also seems like the fan is going on 30 % according to CPUID.

As far as I know 147 Fahrenheit is pretty low if we are talking about overheating, right? Im not sure if its my graphic card even though its my oldest component, maybe my PSU? I dont know so I am seeking some help here to neglict my failing hardware. I would be grateful if someone could help me

Hello...8800 GT's have always had overheating problems... verify your fan is clean... remove old thermal paste, clean GPU and heatsink, and re-apply new thermal Paste... but artifacts is sign of a failing Graphic card.

65*c is really low, but that is only the temp whee the sensor is, it does not mean you are not overheating on another part of the board.
Typically the GPU does not die, normally it is the supporting hardware (voltage management, or memory) which starts to have issues, and to me it sounds like this is what may be going on.

Do you have another system that you can try your GPU in, or another GPU you can try in your system? That would rule out the possibility of it being something else (though it looks pretty clear that this is a GPU issue).

Also check your voltages. If your PSU is starting to die then it can cause these kinds of problems as well.

At the end of the day you will probably have to replace the PSU or GPU (or both). Thankfully PSUs are not as expensive as they use to be, and new hardware does not require as much power as those old 8800GT cards did. A modern GPU equivilant to the 8800GT only costs ~$80 or so. Something in the $150-200 range would be a nice upgrade for your system, while running cooler, quieter, and using less power.

Thanks for the reply.Yeah, most likely my graphic card is failing but the temp I got from the monitoring seems pretty low for it to be overheating. Anyway I will try to re-apply thermal paste and so on as you said. If its not working I just buy a new card, its pretty old anyway.

My two didn't and I know of others that haven't had any problems and 65c is nowhere near the thermal treshhold so stop with the nonsense.

I haven't thinked about trying another GPU in my system. Hehe. I can probably borrow a working GPU from a friend. Which is a pretty easy way solving the problem. If its broken I just buy a new one, the 8880 GT have done great for me this far.

I hear you, My last GPU was a 9800GT which is just a re-brand of the exact same card, and it still works pretty well even on modern games. The only reason I ended up upgrading to the 570 was to get native CUDA support for Adobe Premiere... but to be honest it has been used a lot more for gaming than video editing 😀
Now my old 9800GT is in my dad's PC, and it is still humming right along. Only problem I ever had with it was that I installed a custom cooler, and after a few years the ram heatsinks kept falling off which would cause stability issues. But once I got tired of that I slapped the stock cooler back on, and it just keeps on going.

Hello... I want to thank everyone on correcting me... the single space small fan ( like a 9800gt ) on those very fine GPU's, were not the best combination... depending on the clocking speeds and application for use.

Should hear the single slot 4850 in my ex's machine. I wondered when I heard it if it was as loud as the FX5800 of old...

8800GT is an older card. Assuming you have the budget I would say just get a new one. GT640 is about the same speed, anything faster then that will be faster then your card. Don't forget about AMD either. The 5750/5770 are faster and cheap to.
