Is my card OC out fo the box?

Silly question,so i was checking out the box for my sapphire r9 280 i got a few years back. Im just now noticing it says OC Edition (I know, im stupid), does that mean its OC right out of the box or do I need to tweak the settings to get that performance? Also if i must tweak should i do it through radeon settings or through sapphire software?

The reference R9 280 design (by AMD themselves) boosts up to 933MHz. Your card automatically boosts to 940MHz. It's not much, but it is a factory OC.

It runs at higher than factory clock speeds right out of the box. Nothing needed on your end.

Oh ok thats very little. So I have generic cooling (fan in front and back) would that be sufficient for overclocking it to say 1000MHz and maybe manually changing gpu fan speed?

1000MHz? Let's try a more realistic goal. I'd shoot for 960-970MHz. Believe it or not, the extra 30MHz will make a lot more heat.

Stress test in Unigine Valley (or Heaven) for at least an hour, then stress test for at least an hour with the fuzzy doughnut of death (Furmark).

Even if it doesn't crash during these tests, look for artifacts. Artifacts appear in overclocking as black or white polygons dancing around the screen, appearing and disappearing seemingly randomly. This tells you that your OC settings are too aggressive. Back off on the core clock if these appear.

Alright well ill test it out and see how it goes. So would automatic fan speed be recommended under the additional load?

I have no idea, I've not worked with R9 280 cards before. I've worked with R9 280X cards before, but that's a totally different core.

If it stays below 85C on the die, I'd leave the fans on auto. If it gets hotter than 85C, I'd set the fans to run faster.
