My computer has a i5-2500 and a 970 with 3.5GB of VRAM and 16GB of RAM

Sure, the GTX 970 can support a 144Hz monitor. Whether or not you will achieve 144fps is entirely dependent on the game you play. Most games will not achieve 144fps, but that is not a reason to not get a 144Hz monitor.
