Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can help me understand the 3dMark scores I got and see if I should get a 1440p monitor. Basically I recently got a GTX 970, my cpu is an i5-3570k, windows 8.1 and 8gb ram.

I ran the 3Dmark test FireStrike Extreme because it says its pushes 1440p resolution and these were my results:

3DMark Score
4672
Graphics Score
5063
Physics Score
6854
Combined Score
2273
Graphics Test 1
26.63 fps
Graphics Test 2
18.76 fps
Physics Test
21.76 fps
Combined Test
10.57 fps

This was actually 63% better than other scores it says but looking at those fps makes me wonder , should I get 1440p monitor? Honestly I bought the card because people we claiming one of this one can push 1440 resolution but after seeing this score I no longer know. Any help of clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Solution
Don't worry about the 3D mark scores, game benchmarks are much more relevant.
I have a GTX 770 with a 1440p monitor.
In Skyrim I can use the light version of high res texture mods and have to disable MSAA, but this gives me a consistent 60 FPS. The limitation is largely in the 2GB of VRAM on my card.
In Far Cry 3 I used to get 50 FPS with ultra detail at 1080p. At 1440p I can get the same frame rate by disabling MSAA and setting postFX to low.

The GTX 970 is 20% to 25% faster than the GTX 770, plus you have 4GB of VRAM.
This means you can easily enable MSAA where I cannot and use the highest detail textures.
You will have no trouble supporting a 1440p monitor.

As long as you keep certain graphical setting on medium (shadows, AA, AF, etc) you will be fine IMO. You will not be getting 60FPS in most games but should average 45-50. Certain demanding games might need settings tweaked.
