As you can see from the picture, I have knocked a capacitor off my motherboard, the area is located on the back of the board behind the CPU, is it safe to use the computer with this missing?

Solution

This is smt ceramic capacitor, i repair electronics and based on size and location it is filtering capacitor for vcore voltage. There is no real need to replace it unless you plan to overclock. You would be surprised how many times repair in service is just removing broken component and not replacing it.
I would assume all capacitors, resistors, etc. are there for a reason. My answer as to whether you should attempt to boot up the computer would depend on how new/expensive your parts are, particularly the CPU. If it is an old Core 2 Duo or something similar, I would probably try it. A new i5 or i7, I wouldn't take the risk.

that is not a capacitor

that is or a resistance or other component on the back of that mainboard

it is very likely that something will burn out if you se it or sudden restarts happen while using the pc without a component like this is missing

i don't think it is missing, it is just two soldiering points with no component sodlered in it, looks like you pulled it off? do you still have it? could be a matter of resolder it on place, seems that the solder points on the mainboard are still intact and that is a good thing

i would try to find pictures of this mainboard to determine if really something is missing and if it can be fixed to keep using this mainboard or if you better buy another mainboard

I have booted the computer up and it seems to work ok, but what damage could it do by using the computer with this capacitor missing?

i had the doubt and tried to search for this particullar component, since it is a soldered on the surface component and there is lots of them with the same size, shape and similar colors, it seems that is a ferrite bead(i could be wrong, sorry, hard to be sure), a filter for noise component on the electric current fgoing to the component, which i am no sure if is chipset or what other component,

i would try to find it, resolder it and do tests because it could leat to sudden hangs of the system or restarts, weird problems in general

Solution
yes, most capacitors are there just to filter noise and you can live without them

sometimes you can't

something interesting would be if the same damage that took apart this part happened on another place, the board could have other problems
