So, I ain't the type of IT specialist that knows everything about CPUs, so I could use some help.

CPU is the AMD FX-6100 cloked @ 4.4ghz.

The MOBO is a GA970-UD3P

The GPU is an R9 270X

Since the graphics card and mobo are rather decent, I'm starting to think that my CPU (being quite old architecture) is starting to fade in today's industry and could be the reason for me not being able to run some games in a playable FPS. What do you guys think? Is it my CPU or should I get a better graphics card too?

Solution
Run GPU-Z or MSI Afterburner and see whether the GPU load is 100% . If not , there is bottleneck. Do a stress test. Being overclocked FX 6100 shouldnt bottleneck R9 270X . Maybe , you re expecting too much from your hardware , which is not so bad .

afaik the CPU clock is not really the most important part. I've heard the cache is really important but I don't know

The motherboard should be okay, not sure about the GPU though..
