Is my CPU dead?

Hello everyone,

I have a bit of a story, so please hear me out.

Awhile ago, I had a little system set up with an i3-550 and no GPU. For browsing the web and watching videos online, it was perfect. I was temporarily running it off of a cheap 300W PSU; I figured it would be okay since the i3 drew so little power. Anyway, the day came where I found an external DVD drive laying around and decided to try plugging it in via USB. Nothing happened. So I stupidly tried plugging in a standard 12V laptop charger into the DVD drive. From the little electrical knowledge that I have, I guess that that power then went into the computer or something. Anyway, the PSU's fans kicked into high gear for a second, then everything shut down. I knew the PSU was dead for sure, but I wasn't so sure about the motherboard (or more importantly, the CPU). Two weeks later, I had received a new PSU. I tried hooking everything up and...no light on the mobo. It didn't POST either. I now know that the motherboard is dead too.

So anyway, now we get to my question. What are the chances of the CPU being dead as well? If they're less than 50%, then I'm willing to buy another LGA1156 motherboard and take a chance, because I don't want to let this champ of a processor go to waste. I'd be really sad to see this thing go. As far as I know, it's not easy to kill a modern CPU because they have safeguards and everything, but I don't know.

Thank you.
