Is my cpu just weak? (i7 5700HQ)

So, I recently (around 4 months ago) bought an MSI gaming laptop - Msi GE 62 2QF.
Overall i'm very happy about it, it's not an absolute beast but it does run most games on high settings atleast. The thing is, I noticed recently that my cpu reaches 100% performence wayyy too often, and it also affects games performence massively, for example, I was playing Overwatch, and just had Chrome open with a facebook tab. My cpu instantly got to like 100%, with Chrome getting to 50% and the game at around 40%. I can no longer watch a stream on Twitch TV, or even youtube videos while playing.

So you might think Chrome is the problem, maybe it hoggs the Cpu like crazy, but no. While playing Dying Light, I have to close like almost every application (Battle.net, Steam, Skype, obviously Chrome and so on) just so that the CPU won't get to 100% instantly, and I play the game at around 80-90%. It just feels really weak to me. In comparison, my old Desktop PC had a i5 750 (!!) and I could game and watch videos (on Chrome) and do multiple tasks without the pc getting extremely slow.

Maybe there's something to be switched on in the BIOS or something of sort? should I benchmark the CPU?

PC is always connected to a power source.

EDIT: So I made a comparison with a friend, he has an i7 6700, and the game Overwatch runs at around 3% for him. Mine reaches 50%!!!!!!! at menu, and around 80% ingame. Something must be wrong with my CPU.

Thank you very much!

First, download the free 3DMark software and run and report all four Tests from Ice Storm to Fire Strike. That's good for gaming performance.

HWMonitor or similar will report CPU speed and temperatures when you run other software. Use it to check what speed your CPU is running at.

OCCT can do the same thing while running test programs.

You can save screen shots and then link them to posts when they are hosted.

Yes ofcourse, otherwise I wouldn't be complaining haha.
FPS drops immensly, from 60 to 30-20.

I already tried parking my CPU, let me try that again.

That is a real 4 core i7 with hyperthreading, although slower. (other laptop i7s can be very similar to desktop i3s)

I would be interested to know what speed the CPU is running at. That's a 46W TDP chip, which is quite high, and the TDP can be lowered to 35W or so, but limiting the clock speed. I would certainly run some benchmarks, both graphic, and processing.

Your laptop has a GTX 970M GPU, right? That's about the same performance as a desktop GTX 960, unless it is further limited by its thermal envelope.

Could you please instruct me on how to properly benchmark my CPU? I would then post the results here, thank you very much.
