i just built a gaming pc, my cpu can get up to 83 Celsius, is that normal? (83 celsius when gaming, around 50 - 60 when using simple applications.)

im running one system fan and the stock fan that came with the cpu. should i get more?

thanks in advance.

intel core i7 4790k
msi gtx 980
msi h97 gaming 3
windows 8

Solution
Idle should be between 30-40 with room temps around like 73F. Load should not go higher 80 ideally, but generally with a good cooler it will stay under 70.
yeah man..you need at least 2 intake fans preferably 120mm, and 1 exhaust fan, preferably 140mm to keep the air flowing inside..don't let the CPU heat that much..if u put a liquid cooler, temps with gaming come to like 40C and using all kinds of apps, it won't go above 50C if u are not OC'ing..air coolers like CM TX3 bring 83C to 65C..but whatever man..u definitely need extra case fans..

83c sounds about right for the stock cooler on a 4790k. Maybe a tiny bit hot. I would get a coolermaster hyper 212 EVO. Cheap and VERY good.

You won't be overclocking because you do not have the proper motherboard so there is no point o get an expensive cooler. DO NOT buy a liquid cooler.

tiny voices: i just bought a new case and i'm gonna be using it when it arrives, its bigger and has more places for fans. so i'm gonna have one fan on the front sucking air in, one fan on the back exhausting air, one on the bottom sucking in and two on the top exhausting. in addition i'm gonna install the cooler master V8 cooler (2 140 mm fans) on my CPU instead of the stock cooler. does that sound good or should i do something different?

btw, why do you say that my motherboard isn't proper for overclocking? the manual has a lot of tools and tips for overclocking. is there something i don't know about overclocking?

thanks for your answers guys, appreciated.

That is alot of fans. No need for that many. The front/rear/ one top is plenty.

Your motherboard is an H97 board, not designed for overclocking. You can only raise the base clock (not recommended) a small amount on that board. You do not have control over the things you need to overclock like a Z97 board. You will really not be doing any overclocking on that board. A z97 board is required for that.

I changed my whole case, i have now 200mm front intake fan, 2 140mm exhaust fans and a coolermaster v8 gts cooler. The tempratures are very low atm. 29 - 38 when idle, and about 50 - 60 under load. thanks for your answers.
