hey i want to use duel channel memory mode on my HP elitedesk 800 g1 pc. The motherboard support duel channel. The computer came with the 4 GB DDR3 1600 MHZ stick. if i buy another 4 GB (1600) Stick and put into duel channel slots. Will it work as duel channel or do i need to buy a pair of 4GB RAMS of same manufacturer that comes in same packet for duel channel performance? thankx

Solution

yes if it works you will get dual channel
two answers:

1. If a second stick works, you will in fact get dual channel operation.

2. Adding a second stick is not guaranteed to work.
Ram is sold in kits for a reason.
A motherboard must manage all the ram using the same specs of voltage, cas and speed.
Ram from the same vendor and part number can be made up of differing manufacturing components over time.
Some motherboards can be very sensitive to this.
That is why ram vendors will NOT support ram that is not bought in one kit.
It is safer to get what you need in one kit.

I would go to a ram web site like Kingston and access their ram upgrade app.
Enter your laptop make/model and you will get a list of supported upgrades.
Then, if there is a problem, you will get support.
