Question Is my gpu bottlenecking my cpu?

Hi

Recently I have been experiencing major fps drops (180 to 20-30) as well as my computer running slow overall f.e. the spotify volume scroll is stuttering. I have a one fan 1060 6GB, i5 6500
and 16GB of ram
I have this setup for about 1,5 years and i have been experiencing these issues after a system reinstall. This time however it didn't work. Changing the graphics on games didn't work as the fps stayed the same. Thanks for any help.

Get MSI Afterburner to monitor components while gaming. Add CPU and GPU temp and usage on the OSD. You might experience thermal throttling or temps are high to begin with.

The program labels both of my disks as "good".
Specs:
bequiet 500W
msi b150 gaming m3 1511 motherboard
2x8GB of ram 1063Mhz

I forgot to write that in the post but i checked my temps as well as cpu and gpu usage and these are the normal results:
gpu: temp - 50/60 usage 20-40
cpu: temp 30-40 usage 70 - 100
My concern is that it started happening all of a sudden

Not sure what your CPU is, but you may be hitting the thermal throttle limiter. When that happens your CPU goes into Super Slow mode to try and save itself. Use some canned air and blow out the dust bunnies on the CPU cooler and Fans. Also blow out the fans and coolers for the GPU. Then give it a try again.

If your CPU is hitting 100C, then your severe fps dips are pretty much certainly caused by thermal throttling. If cleaning the HSF doesn't help, something may have gone wrong with contact between the CPU and HSF, may need to remove, re-paste and re-install. If this does not help much or makes things worse, something may have gone wrong with the mounting mechanism itself and you may need a new HSF.

When Intel's stock HSF is installed properly, it'll work fine for 4+ years. When installed slightly crooked though, the anchor pins will work themselves loose over time and the HSF won't be making proper contact after a while. While you can try re-seating the HSF, chances are that the pins got scraped and stretched to the point that the stock HSF isn't reusable.

Your temps are fine...the GPU usage is low at 20-40 though.

I would recommend using display driver uninstaller to completely remove the GPU drivers and download the latest driver version and reinstall...also make sure your motherboard chipset drivers are up to date.

Im sorry but at full load my CPU only gets to 41C (Air cooled). 100C is at the Thermal throttle limit for most CPU's. Shutdowns start happening at 110-120C.

Nobody asked yet, but what type of hard drive or drives are you using for your OS and programs? Is it a 5400 to 7200 rpm mechanical HDD or is it an SSD. What brand and model is it? The drive could possibly have known bugs and a firmware update may be available. What games are you playing that have low fps? The game may have been updated and the patch may have known bugs.




I've personally experienced at least 6 of my own HDDs from various brands and ages, slowly dying over the last 15 years. Usually it starts out with slow loading and then latter on programs will stutter, because of the slowed transfer speed and/or seek speed. Two of the drives died before I could fully back them up when I finally noticed issues. I've found most programs will report the drive as good most of the time despite the drive dying. I've just recently replaced a 250GB Seagate Barracuda drive with an SSD in a low priority Linux virtual machine, because of been degrading in performance.

The only SSDs I have had issues were Samsung 840 and 840 Evo drives that had degraded performance over a period of months in areas of the drives they were not read or written to often enough. The 840 never got a firmware update release, but the 840 Evo firmware released to fix the performance issues never fixed my drive, so I replaced it with an 850 Evo.

Yeah that may be the case for my 1TB HDD as i've had mine for about 6 years

You can get CrystalDiskInfo (Free) and it will give you info about the drives. It will also read any smart drive error messages if there is any.

Ok so I'm gonna recap what has happened over the couple of days. I gave my computer to a specialist and he told me that i need to reinstall my OS, as I accidentally installed it on my hdd. Well it didn't help at all. I've downloaded CrystalDiskInfo and it says that both of my disks are fine. While playing games like cs:go my temps for both gpu and cpu are fine. Usages are not as cpu sits at 80-100 while the gpu at 20-40. If you happen to have any ideas please post them.

The GTX1060 is still quite competent at most 1080P/high or Ultra scenarios in most games, although naturally, the 1660, 1660 Ti, 2060, and the 2060 Super are faster.

So what you're essentially saying is that i need to get a cpu such as a i7 6700k?
