Is my GPU dead? Or have I miswired it

So I just finished building my first custom PC with the help of people on this site (thanks!).

I started from scratch, but reused my 2TB hard drive and my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 graphics card, as both still serve a pretty decent purpose. However now that everything is up and running, the PC won't recognise my GPU in device manager, even after disabling the IGPU.

I have the 2nd to last most recent BIOS update, but can't update it tonight because I don't have USB and the file doesn't run automatically (I literally have no external storage atm).

The card worked absolutely fine in my last PC, but in this new one when I run either the graphics card CD drivers, or even download the newest ones from the manufacturers website, both state "Hardware not compatible" as it isn't registering the graphics card. However the fan to the GPU is working. It is connected to the power supply via a 6 pin VGA cable. Should I connect 8 pins to the power supply despite only having 6 in the card?

Lastly, it's important to mention that when the PC boots up, a red light by "GPU" turns on for about 3-5 seconds. Other than that, thanks in advance for any advice!
