Is my GPU dead?

I have had this GPU (BFG GeForce GTX 280 H2OC) since October 2008, quite recently it has been locking up with fuzzy artifacts as seen in this image. This happens just after this point, when I think it initiates the GPU?

I want to rule other hardware out, but I suspect it is the GPU. What is the best method to pin it down to the GPU? I have already done a MemTest with the RAM, all was good.

As BFG are no longer around, and I suspect the warranty is long gone should I take the block off and look for any signs? What would I look for if it was external? It happens straight away so to me that would indicate it is not overheating?

I thank you for your time in advance for reading and offering any advice.

Well from what i can see it could either be a gpu problem, a driver problem (very much doubt this one) or your psu could be not supplying enough power to the card a couple of things you can try.

1)Try removing the drivers in safe mode and booting the system up without any drivers
2)Try another Gpu (borrow off a friend or use a spare one lying around) with around the same power consumption to check the powersupply
3)although it would be very odd to overheat that quickly you could re-sit the heat sink/re apply thermal paste and see if this solves the problem

But it does look like its pretty screwed and with it being a fairly old piece of hardware it could of just reach the end of its life.

Thanks for your response.

1. Booting in safe mode, removing the drivers (Driver Sweeper), and re-installing did not help.
2. I don't have any spares (or any friends) to check PSU, but I am pretty confident it is not this (new PSU loads of juice)
3. I would probably attempt this, with the view of it not helping.

My suspicions would be that it has given up. But it seems such a shame to throw a piece of kit like that away, could there be anywhere one could send this to be repaired?

I am not going to recommend you try this... but, you can google "baking a video card." Will need spare thermal paste.

I limped my broken 8800GTX along for at least a year this way (may have been closer to 18 months), baking a total of three times with diminishing time between failures each go-around.

Not that I am aware of unfortunate BFG are no longer around as that would be the only place I can think of going to

But like wudai_e said if you can find someone else's pc to test the card on you could make sure if its the card or your system

Thanks, looking now. I may try this, I mean there is no other way. It can't be repaired (I spoke to Nvidia) and it's out of warranty.

My issue is I don't have a spare one 🙁

Do you have afterburner?

Is the card OCd?

Make sure your cable to the monitor is still good...a bad pin can make things green...

Up side is that performance of a 280 is rather cheap today. If you need to get a new card I would not go lower than a 7850.

1. Nope, no afterburner.
2. Not OC'd
3. I will look into this, thankyou.
4. In terms of replacement I was thinking of upgrading to something better, but still with a manufacturer fitted watercooling solution.
