I have the MSI R7950-2PMD3GD5 Radeon HD 7950. I got this yesterday. My problem is, when I ran furmark, 10 second tests instantly jumped from 45c idle to 80,90, and then 100c. I thought "it's furmark, it's crazy". Now I've tried Far Cry 3, and it boosts fan speed to 100% and Temps to 100c on the menu. Is this a defective GPU?

Solution
sounds like bad thermal paste to me, if the card is new then get it replaced with RMA, if its old then take off the headsink and clean off the old thermalpaste, apply a rice grain of thermalcompound to the gpu them place the heatsink back on.

It could be the airflow. In OEM cases airflow is hard to come by. Its the same with custom computers if your case does not have enough air coming in from intake fans. Cable management also can cause this.

CPPC was very good about the wiring, although I have a rather small case, and it has only three case fans, two of which are push pull for my liquid cooler.. Could that be the problem?

Do you live in a hot climate?

Yes, I live in Arizona, and it is reletively hot in my room, but I still don't see how this is an acceptable temp. If I run anything at 100c constantly, won't it damage my card?

Decrease the life, thats fairly a little close to the TJMax. I'd say, try cleaning the dust on the card, and if still 100C, then re-apply some good thermal paste, the old might be too old

It's a brand new card. My PC came in the mail yesterday. There's no dust on the card even.
