Is my GPU not getting the performance it should?

Hi everyone. I recently purchased myself an laptop for gaming purposes (an MSI GT70) and the one I chose had what seemed like a very powerful GPU that was also great for the money; an Nvidia GTX 670MX with 3gb of video ram. I researched a whole lot about this computer and other computers with the same graphics card, and everyone with the same GPU as me claims to be getting a lot better peformance on their games than I am currently. For example, most people say they can play games like battlefield 3 on ultra while maintaining a high framerate with the 670MX, but I haven't even been able to run this game on high comfortably (getting highs of 40 fps on the smallest maps, and only around 30 on larger maps) I already tried installing the latest drivers and overclocking my GPU but neither seem to make a whole lot of a difference. I just thought a GPU this powerful could handle games like this a little better, but i could be wrong. If anyone has similair specs with the same video card as me and would like to mention what kind of frames you're picking up on high and ultra setting on BF3, that would be greatly appreciated. Here's my hardware specs:

Intel i7 3630QM
Nvidia GeForce GTX 670MX 3gb GDDR5
12gb DDR3 ram
750GB 7200RPM HDD

Also, if anyone has a idea of something i could do to fix this problem (if there is one), i'm open to suggestions. Thanks 😀

That is a decent mobile GPU, but, to be honest, it's not going to run BF3 on Ultra at 60fps, your performance is about standard. Don't be discouraged though, there's almost no visual difference between High settings and Ultra settings, it's a gimmick really at 1080p. Higher resolutions usually fair differently. I'd overclock your GPU as much as you can and use automatic settings to achieve the highest FPS you can in games, they usually still look great too. My friend had a 670m 3GB in his GT60 and it doesn't run BF3 too well really, so count your blessings with that GPU, overclocked it's pretty much a 675m. Remember that gaming isn't about the details rather than the gameplay, I mean, some people still game with 8800GT/GTS/GTX cards.

Also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsqLS7XZ55k He seems to be getting similair performance. Also obviously make sure your temps are not getting too high, use CoreTemp to monitor your CPU and make sure it's boosting correctly, and use MSI Afterburner to monitor GPU temps.

I'd also like to note, I'd bet every one of those guys bvragging about better performance turned down their anti-aliasing. It's not really needed on screens below say, 20", just turn it down or off and enjoy the graphical goodness.

Ok, ill give overclocking another try and turn off the anti aliasing and see where that takes me. It definatly looks a little better when overclocking, not substantially, but good enough to see a little bit of an fps change...

personally, i dont think laptops are made for overclocking, they are cramped and hot enough as it is.
a 670m is not on par with a desktop 670 (i have one and i play at ultra, bf3 MP).
just be careful, be mindful of the thermal issues that you might encounter

but of course this is your decision, just giving my 2 cents

Ya it should help out, like I said, the lower settings in BF3 especially look very close to Ultra/High, it's hard to pick out the differences. Also Conz29, I agree, it seems that overclocking these mobile 670 cards doesn't really affect the temperature too much though, they overclock quite well.

Ya, i usually play it on medium settings to keep a high framerate consistantly. The graphics quality isn't bad or anything, it just dosen't seem right for a $1500 laptop to run stuff on medium settings
