Hi, so i've overclocked my rx 480 but HWMonitor is saying its pulling 187.66 Watts.. and in GPUz its saying 209 Watts.

Is this safe for my motherboard and my gpu ? I don't want to destroy anything because its a brand new build..

rx 480 - core 1375MHz - memory 2250MHZ - +56mV
i5 7600k
Gigabyte Gaming K5 Motherboard
850w thermaltake PSU
16GB DDR4 3200MHz

rsuxT

Solution

yes, provided the PSU you are using is of...

yes it is a 8 pin

yes anything under 80 shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah i've been playing games for the past few hours, so it seems to be stable to me

sorry mate but games aren't enough, you need to run something like unigine heaven, furmark etc. these apps represent a worst case scenario. if your GPU passes through these tests then your OC has been successful.

and yes i have run heaven too

well it seems fine then :) , but if i were you i would run furmark just to get that peace of mind that my OC is totally safe. if you want you can download it from here : http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/

MERGED QUESTION
Question from jacob_174 : "High power draw from rx 480 help?"

I'm receiving a high power draw form my overclocked asus rx 480. Gpu-z says 252 watts.. that was when i was running Unigine heaven..

is this an acceptable power draw? I don't want my motherboard or gpu damaged..

Thank you .

asus rx 480 - Core 1375MHz - Memory 2250MHz - +56mV
Gigabyte gaming K5 Motherboard
850 watt thermaltake psu
16gb ram

the GPU draws power from 2 sources, the PCIe x16 slot and the PCIe peripheral connectors from the PSU. the PCIe slot can provide upto 75W of power and the rest of the power is drawn from the PSU. your motherboard would have been damaged if the power draw from the x16 slot exceeded the 75W mark. the RX 480 had this issue at the time of its launch but was immediately fixed within a few days. 252W is an acceptable draw for the RX 480, it is very unlikely that the GPU or motherboard may get damaged. though you should keep an eye out for the voltage applied to the GPU, anything above 1.4V is BAD.

So it doesn't really matter what the gpu power draw is as long as the PSU can handle it ?

yes, provided the PSU you are using is of good quality. you're fine.

Thank you

no problem 😉

MERGED QUESTION
Question from jacob_174 : "Can a overclocked GPU damage a MOBO?"

I've been overclocking SLI builds since the Voodoo 2 days and never once destroyed a motherboard. You will most likely get artifacts or a blue screen when running the GPU out of voltage spec long before destroying your motherboard. Also, many GPU vendors put a BIOS lock down on the amount of overvoltage they can take depending on model (ASUS being notorious for that).

Creating multiple threads for the same topic/issue is called forum spamming and we don't allow it here. Plus keeping the discussion on your overclocked gpu to 1 thread will create less confusion for you and the users trying to help you.

It's called forum etiquette. Tom's Hardware forums are here for a reason not just for you, but for others who may have a similar problem or question. Having two (or more) of the same questions open creates confusion and unnecessary clean up work like the moderator said here. One question or one problem topic, one thread.

I don't need a social justice warrior chiming in thanks.
