Ordered a second-hand RX 480 off some mining company dumping their old cards, and before you say anything
I did know this was somewhat a bad idea, but I was broke and my previous card was dying so I didn't have much choice.
I checked the reviews for their sales and it seemed like it was fine since they were dumping about 50-60 cards off. So I ordered one for about $100
Got it, and it ran fine and everything with the drivers initially. Nothing seemed to be out of place, but soon as I turned on a game to test that's when things went wrong.
The RX spins up like a jet in my room and then as soon as the game starts up (first game was siege) it completely shut off the display, the card seemed to still be running judging by the fans still trying to steal my hearing. But the display wouldn't come back no matter what so I had to force-restart. I tested it again, did the same thing and I made sure not to OC straight out of the box. Did the same thing about three times.
So, at idle the card is running at about 55-63ish celsius. However when I start up a game, any game, the GPU ramps up to about 80 to upwards of 90+ C. WTF? I even tried to run a less demanding game than siege, and it would be the same issue albeit with maybe about 5-10 degrees less. Afterburner wouldn't let me set the temp limit so it was locked at running as high as it can, but I tried to limit power and it still ran over. I don't understand why its going that high for a <Mod Edit> demanding game anyways? My GPU is 5 years older than the RX and it ran my game with about 75ish at full load.
At this point, I suspected that the thermal paste is either blown to dust or wiped off entirely, the seller did say some might've had their paste replaced but I assumed mine would've had some paste on it, or at least replaced. I've ordered some thermal paste to see if that fixes the issue but even then I'm not sure if it'll do much. I can still return the card but I'd like to see if the issue is just that because other than gaming everything else about the card seems to be working fine.
