I been having this issue with applications not responding and task manager not coming up when keys are held down. I ran a check disk on startup and it made some repairs which i thought might have fixed it but the issue is back again. I was recommended to run crystal disk info and i did but not sure what to make of results.

here's a picture of the results. Thanks if you decide to help. Running on windows 7 btw

Run Seatools for Windows on the drive. Run the Short drive self test and long generic. If it fails either test, replace the drive data cable and retest. If it fails again, replacing the drive is probably a necessity. Drive brand does not matter. Seatools works on pretty much all drives.

Hey there, technub9!

I'd recommend you to scroll down the SMART data and post a screenshot of the rest of the results, in order to determine how critical that 'Caution' alert really is. Either way, I'd advise you to back up your data from the HDD somewhere else before proceeding with the troubleshooting. Better safe than sorry, right?

Keep me posted! :)

Hello! Thanks for taking the time to post. I have screenshotted the rest of the results and am in the process of running the short generic and long generic test in the seagate tool.

Not short generic, short drive self test or DST, followed by the long generic. The long generic may take a while but if something happens and it's not finished within a couple of hours, it's a high probability of a problem. You can also run the WD lifeguard tools if you prefer. They have similar tests in that utility to the Seagate tools.

Both tests failed. Does this mean my hard drive is bad or the cable connecting to the motherboard? anyway to narrow down the problem?

Hi again, technub9!

@darkbreeze is right. You should try using a different cable and then test the drive again, but if both tests from your manufacturer's tool fail and the third-party test results from your screenshots above are correct, then you've got a lot of bad sectors already and a lot more pending.
I'd recommend you to back up as much of your data as you can, while you can still access it. Afterwards, I'd get in touch with your manufacturer's technical support for assistance. If your HDD is still under warranty, you should be able to RMA it and get a replacement product. However, I wouldn't trust any important data with the drive as it's most likely to fail soon.

Good luck! Hope we were helpful! :)
