Folks,

Not sure if it belongs into this newsgroup, but here is my problem.
Yesterday we had a big storm and after I got home, I found one of my
computers off (weird, I thought it was plugged into a backup, but I
digress). I switched it on and it took a loooooooooooong time to boot up.
After it finally booted up, everything seems to work fine except for one
thing - my Windows XP Pro doesn't see the second hard drive. The second hard
drive is connected to an IDE controller. When I boot up my computer, it
recognizes a 200 GB drive connected to the controller. When I go to Manage
under My Computer, I can see both hard drives under Disk Drives and the IDE
controller seems to be working fine under SCSI and RAID Controllers.
However, when I go to Disk Management, it takes forever to come up and when
it does come up, the second hard drive isn't there. Oh, and when I go to
command prompt and try to do diskpart, it thinks for a while and comes back
with the "the disk management services could not complete the operation"
error.

What are the chances that my second hard drive is toast?

Thanks for your help.

Konstantin

your not in the right newsgroup for this but whatever. this is a very
serious issue. i think you could rescue the hard drive. boot the pc from the
OS disc. when it give you the option to install a fresh copy of the OS,
repair the OS, or just reboot. press 'r' to repair the OS. this will load
the repair concil. then pick the OS you want to repair. usually you will
only have one option if you only have one OS installed. select that OS.
then put in the administrative password (if any) then press enter. now type
in the comand 'diskpart'. this comand will let you reportion the drive. the
comand for 'diskpart' might be different on your pc but it will give you the
list of valid comands when you first enter the recovery concil. after you
entered the comand 'diskpart' you will see a list of disk portions. you
should see at least one for each disk drive. if you see the disk portion for
your 2nd hard drive just delete the partition and recreate it and it should
be fine. if you do not see the partition for the 2nd hard drive then your
2nd hard drive is most probably toast. there might be one other way to fix
it but it is a bit complicated.

The second hard drive had 3 partitions. Wouldn't deleting a partition mean
that I delete all data on that partition? There is no way around losing the
data? Because that hard drive is worthless to me if it doesn't have the
data.

i'm sorry but repartitioning the drive is the only way to fix it. there
might be another way to fix it without doing that. i'll lokk more into that.
there are applications for fixing this issue without repartitioning the
drive but i don't have them. you said that the drive appeared some wwhere on
your pc. can you even access the disk at all? i got a few ways that can
possibly repare the disk. first lets just check if you can acces the disk
and files that are on the disk on the current pc the disk is installed on.

Go to the second hard drive manufacturer's website and download their
free diagnostic utility. Boot your computer with disk/CD created from
the download and run the tests on the drive.

Good luck

Konstantin:
The first thing you should do in this situation is to download the HD
diagnostic utility that's (hopefully) available from the manufacturer of
your drive. You didn't indicate its make, but if it's one of the more common
ones, e.g., WD, Maxtor, Seagate, Hitachi, etc., all of those manuf. have
available a free diagnostic utility to determine whether your drive is
defective. Since that data is very valuable to you, at this point you should
*not* undertake any Repair install or attempt to manipulate any data. First,
check out whether the disk is defective. If it is, you'll have to try
so-called data recovery programs (do a Google search) or use a data recovery
service (very expensive in most cases). If it's not, then a Repair install
or other operations may work so that at the least you can access your data.
