Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.0 Intel Motherboard
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5
Cable: OKGEAR 18" SATA 6 Gbps Cable, Backward Compatible with 3 Gbps and 1.5 Gbps

How can I know my hard drive is running at SATA3 instead of SATA2.
I tried both SATA2 and SATA3 ports, but the performance looked no difference.

In the device manger. I didn't see the name of SATA3 controller, Mavell.
I also checked the BIOS, all the SATA controllers are set to Enable.

will I get a higher windows index rating if I use the SATA3?

Thanks for any help!

CrystalDiskInfo may tell you that. You shouldn't get a higher windows index rating though, and if it does it is artificial. Your HDD is like a cat that can drive 140 km/h max while the speed limit was 300 km/h. Now the speed limit goes up to 600 km/h but your car still has a maximum of 140 km/h.

It really makes no difference. The limit of your disk is around 125-130MB/s.

Try HDTach.
If the burst speed is around 220 MB/s then it should be SATA2, if the Burst speed is around 250-350MB/s then SATA3. If you get a result of around 1000MB/s, the disk cache is messing the test up. Hope that helps.

I am sure I use the right port.

Here is what I got from HDTach test, it looks like that it's running at SATA3.

That is standard. My 500GB Barracudas have similar performance and I get 5.9. The Windows experience Index is not a serious benchmark. It helps sell hardware. You need an SSD drive to get 7 for Primary Hard disk.

Try 3D Mark Vantage for an overall system performance guide.

But it does look like Sata 3.
