My computer randomly freezes. Sometimes after 6 hours of usage, sometimes after 30 minutes. When it freezes my HDD LED turns red (HDD usage 100%). I can even hear a small grinding noise in my disk. So what exactly does that mean, and is there a way to fix it?

It is always a good idea to keep an eye on their health status. You can do so if you just test them from time to time with WD's DLG tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=UCK4xm

Event Viewer would be the 1st place Id look followed by running HD diagnostics. Download appropriate utilities from your HD vendor site.

Observe the SMART report and look for reallocated/pending and uncorrectable sectors.

WD is still going strong. Turns out it was tilted a bit, and not fixed properly. As soon as I fixed that all problems were gone. More than a month now and this issue never occured again. I've got three WD HDDs in my PC and all of them are working fine. One of them is more than seven years old. Nice going Western Digital !
