Some hdds are just terrible but it could be dying. Laptops are moved around a lot and the cheap hard drives typically installed in them are slow and die often when moved about.
I would run hard disk sentinal and it will tell you a lot of vitals about your hard drive, including faults and other issues. Its a free 30 day trial. See what overall health score it gives the drive.
