Question Is my machine bottlenecked?

Hello! I built my PC maybe 2.5 years ago, and I was not the best at picking the best parts within budget, though I believe I did a fairly decent job. The performance was a huge step up from my old PC, but I recently noticed that I often get lag spikes and generally poor performance, especially in VR.

I come to you in a request for assistance in evaluating what could be bottlenecking my machine (if any).
The specs are the following:

Motherboard: MSI B550-a pro (Configured to run 3200MHz memory)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (Overclocked to ~4GHz)
GPU: GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8GB (GIGABYTE)
Memory: Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO 16GB (2x8)3200MHz
Storage C: KINGSTON SA2000M8500G
Storage D: SEAGATE BarraCuda 2TB (st2000dm008-2fr102)
PSU: Corsair CX650M (650W)

My games are generally stored in the D drive. When I am playing VR, I utilize a Quest 1 and a third-party usb3.0 cable that connects to the back of the PC.

Any suggestions on what parts could be upgraded or software-related solutions would be greatly appreciated! :)

In a general sense, the answer is yes: there's always a bottleneck somewhere.

The real answer though involves seeing what you want out of the machine. If FPS and stability are what you're after, run all the games you want at the lowest graphics settings and see what kind of performance you get. This will give you the maximum FPS you can get with this system. If you're not satisfied with this, then you'll have to upgrade the CPU. Which in this case, a Ryzen 5000 series is a nice bump.

Though issues with latency spikes and whatnot can also be your software configuration, so if you can do your testing with a clean boot with as little running as possible, that'd be helpful.

i would get another 2 sticks of same memory for 32gb vr can be ram intensive
the seagate i would replace the most it will help with load times and texture pop in with a faster drive

the kingston sa2000m is a good drive if you have it in the top slot of the motherboard your not getting the full advantage of that slot ( if it fails to boot into windows in slot 2 nvme you may have to keep it in the top slot.

if you can still boot into the nvme in the second slot for the nvme.


get a Corsair MP600 PRO LPX 2TB put it in top slot.
if you cant boot windows from the second nvme slot then the fastest 3.0 x4 gen you can get

make sure to check that its addressing all the ram in your system e.g

it should say 32gb total physical in system info

it would be 16gb total if its reading it correctly

msi motherboards that ive tested in past always had bad memory slots so its worth a check

Before you do anything my suggestion is to learn more about the computer's performance.

There are three tools that can be used to do so:

Task Manager

Resource Monitor

Process Explorer (Microsoft, free)


Use all three tools but only one tool at at time to observe system performance.

Objective being to discover what system resources are being used, to what extent (%), and what is using any given resource.

Especially any applications/processes that are not expected or unknown.

Compare when VR is not being used/run to when VR is being used/run.

Good chance that the "bottleneck" will be apparent.
