is my memory too fast for my video card?

Hi all,

I am having problems with my custom built Dell Vostro 230... It had 1GB of 1066MHz DDR3 which is completely insufficient I know, So I bought 2 x 1GB Corsair xms3 sticks (for 50p each!) running at 1333MHz. This is where the problems begin. When both cards were inserted at the same time, the systeem just didn't boot, giving strange glitched bars and the PC then hanged whenever the computer got past the BIOS. So, I went and got 2 2GB sticks by OCZ both at 1333MHz again and my computer works with only one of these two cards at a time again, but not both at once, but only sometimes...

Sounds confusing? It is! For me a least, anyway.

The screen glitches out madly, giving me random rectangles of glitching colours and my PC then hangs when both sticks are in, but it works fine when only one card is in. I have ran tests and the RAM sticks are fine, both workwhen they are the sole card in the machine.

I have some thought about what is wrong. My video card is the default Intel G41 Express chipset and that only supports 1066MHz DDR3 and maybe that is what causes the odd glitches. When I run with either card (but only one at once), Task Manager reports a memory speed of 1333MHz and no problems occur. However, sometimes when I boot up with the 2 cards installed (if it boots at all), Task Manager says the cards are running at 1066MHz and the system is stable.

I will be buying an NVIDIA GeForce 730 (Thanks to another TH user for helping me with that :D) but will that resolve my issue?

Solution
It's worth entering the BIOS and checking RAM speeds, make sure that all the mem sticks run at the same clocks,I am sure there will be a setting to put them all (3) to 1066MHz that should make them stop causing problems.

I SOLVED THE PROBLEM!!!

Seeing as though the mobo is moderately old (only 11 years, not much), the dedicated memory for the graphics was a mere 64MB which is totally insufficient and I now realise this. I have upped the onboard graphics to 256MB in the BIOS and the machine works perfect, even with 4GB installed over two cards.

Even though my main machine is dual channel 16GB, it feels nice to have discovered how to build my own PC, despite it's limited power.
