Is my Mobo dead?

So lately I have been getting a lot of BSoD(machine_check_exception) and have no idea what is causing them and before trying to pin point what component is causing the problems by plugging in the bare essentials I tried to flash from BIOS.

I have an Abit AV8 which comes with a BIOS flasher tool. so i went to Abit's site and download the appropriate BIOS file and clicked update in the flasher tool. all was going well until it was "verifying" the update and it said that it couldn't verify it. I tried to update it another 2 times and I got the error at the same spot twice. I then restarted my computer only to realize that nothing was happening. I restarted it and the abit logo appeared like always and then I got that menu saying that windows was not shutdown properly last time yadda yadda. I tried all of the safe modes and "start windows normally" but it always stops loading at a certain process and just hangs.

at this point I'm freaking out cause I may have just ruined my mobo. I open my case and reset the CMOS by moving the jumper. I power up again saying that it's been reset to defaults but i still can't get past that screen saying that windows wasn't shut down properly.

Is there anything I can do or is my mobo dead?

"I power up again saying that it's been reset to defaults but i still can't get past that screen saying that windows wasn't shut down properly. "

If you get that far consistently, the mobo is probably good. It sounds like the motherboard is completing the POST, then the boot process hangs. Try reinstalling the OS.

Try resetting the Cmos battery at the Jumper, Read tht at Abit site that even when bios' update is successful they suggest you rest the cmos.

Try that vefie reformatting.

I would download the ORIGINAL BIOS and "update" from there to see if that works. Or try all available BIOSes so that you get a "verified" update.

How would I update the BIOS if the OS won't load nor can I get to a command prompt.

I have tried to reinstall the OS a couple times now but everytime it finishes loading the install files it hangs on "starting windows"

do I need a new BIOS chip, I hear they are only like $5.

and I did reset the CMOS.

Have you tried taking out your memory and putting it back in or just put in one stick of memory. I know I had a hell of a time once and it was a bad memory chip. Kept making the computer reboot. Can you get into the bios at start up?

I just realized that if I hit tab to view the POST at the bottom it gives me the option of entering ALT+F2 to go to into AWDFLASH. If i do that it trys to load AWDFLASH.EXE from my floppy drive. Can I flash my BIOS with this application?

Thoe bsod is mostly faulty ram, but i read that a error message MACHINE... is a CPU problem. Try to test it.

i know I can run memtest for the ram. how many passes should it take to decide if they are faulty. (I did buy cheapie rosewill ram)

How do I test if it's the CPU?

leave memtest for about 20 min and you will know, as for the cpu try a 3d mark 06 it has a cpu test that should stres it hard enoght to show if its bad. Or if you have some other one to replace it an check if bsod is there anymore.

YES!
okay, well my computer now boots to windows and operates fine now. I'm sure I'll still get those random crashes but i'll try running those tests.
Seems like I didn't mess up my BIOS enough that I could still reflash it. Right after using the AWDFLASH.EXE program its back to its normal self.
thank you all of you.
