Is my monitor defective?

Just after a year my Dell U2417H just got this red verticle line shooting down from the screen. Not sure how this happend, and there isnt any physical damage to the monitor.

Any idea why this happend?

A component has given up the ghost and you see it trying to escape your monitor... it's broken - yes. It happens!

It's probably broken and definitely sounds like the internal video circuitry, but to be on the safe side try:

1) reset to factory mode, run diagnostics or whatever you can do in monitor settings to change things around in case it alters something

2) try different input (i.e. HDMI, DP, DVI?)

3) try different cable
