I have an MSI A78M-E35 (MS-7721) motherboard and I'm looking to upgrade my CPU to this i5 from Intel. It says that the processor is compatible with LGA 1151, what does that mean and does my motherboard have it?
I'm afraid not, the FM2+ socket is pretty old at this point and doesn't support many powerful CPU's. You'll need to upgrade your motherboard before having access to more powerful CPU's like an Intel i5 or AMD FX line.
I'm afraid not, you'll need a different motherboard to use an LGA 1151 CPU.
The "LGA 1151" is the type of CPU socket that the motherboard and CPU use. It specifically is the number of pins, size, and layout of the socket on the motherboard, and both the CPU and motherboard must be matched with the same socket type to work together.
From your current motherboard's support page it says your motherboard uses a 'FM2+' socket, so the only CPU's you can currently use are FM2+ designated CPU's.

Okay... is there any CPU you know of that can perform to the same extent but is compatible with my motherboard? What criteria should I look for?

Sets me back a bit, though whatever, I guess it's time to upgrade anyway.
My situation at this point is finding an MSI LGA 1151 motherboard, any tips (and if possible, any ones that support DDR3?)
Honestly the best thing would be to post a new thread with an overall budget for PC upgrades. Several members will be able to comb through the price lists and build an upgrade that might be even more cost effective and powerful than the LGA 1151 line. 😉
