is my old power supply support the new z370 motherboards? and more

Hello everyone,

I have an old pc that I want to replace it with a new one.

My intention is to buy the new i5-8400, with keeping the current gtx 660, and with one of these motherboards:

GIGABYTE Z370 AORUS Gaming 5
ASUS ROG Strix Z370-E Gaming
MSI Z370 GAMING M5

I also would like to buy new mid-range GPU after one or two years.


My current power supply is Thermaltake W0093RU 500W ATX 12V 2.0


1) My question is, can my old power supply support the mentioned parts?

2) Please recommend a ram for my PC (8GB only, I will buy another next year maybe)

3) Please recommend a motherboard that is good in Audio function that has good sound quality (from the previous list or another)

4) Please recommend a decent SSD (240GB at least)

1) Yes, usually old PSU will have problem with newest GPUs instead of MBs.

You don't have a 500W power supply. The Thermaltake TR2-500 PP (W0093RU) is only a 450W power supply with a 500W peak rating (i.e. see the OEM CWT model number PSF450S-30). This is typical Thermaltake liar labeling from that era (circa 2006). The Over Power Protection will kick in at around 475 Watts.

If you encounter any problems when using the CPU's low power sleep states (i.e. C6 or C7 or C8) you will need to disable support for low power sleep states in the motherboard's BIOS setup.

I am not sure about what you said when you mentioned this part:

Sorry but I am not familiar with those terms.

Samsung 960 EVO Series - 250GB PCIe NVMe (the PCIe slot is better than the SATA, so I picked this one rather than the above)

Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (1x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 2666MHz (PC4-21300) C16 (the ram seller which recommended above does not support international shipping - amazon)

RAM speed is more related to mb although will be impacted by CPU. Intel is not as picky as Ryzen, 3000 should mostly do fine and the mb should be capable. 3200 may need some luck/bios update/samsung b-die, it will be safe if you purchase a 2x4 gb listed on MB QVL list since it has been tested. I purchased a ripsaw set not listed in QVL, but running 3200 atm.
 


The maximum speed supported by the asus motherboard is up to 4000 MHz (higher than 2666 MHz will require an OC)

So, if I am not interested in overclocking world, the best option I have is to purchase a ram with 2666 MHz speed?

Is there any actual differences between speed for example 2666 and 3200?

How old is the unit? Not familiar with the psu, thermaltake makes both good and bad psus...
