Is my pci e slot broken

Hello, i bought a gigabyte ud7 z68 board to use with my 2 xfx 6950s and asus xonar essence st pci cards.

well i wanted to put the graphics cards cards in the first pci 16x and the 4th one that runs at pci 8x and the sound card in between the 2 in the pci slot.

before i explain what is wrong both cards are fine i have used them before and I just tested again.

so what happened is what ever card i put into the x8 slot and when i power up the fans rev to max RPM's and the pc wont recognize that card but the one in the first slot is fine. sound card im not worried about it works in both PCI slots.

so right now i have the 2 of them in slot 1 and 3 right next too each other and as im writing this the top card is 57c with just Google chrome and CCC open. before when i had the asus crosshair v formula with the cards spaced the top card was only 35C at idle so i cant imagine what the temps would be while playing skyrim or BF3 right now

so to end this as i can keep going on is I want to know if the slot is broken (which im pretty sure it is just making sure) or if there is something about this board that maybe i have to do to make it work as they do initially want you to use slot 1 and 3 so its 16x 16x but i know that 16x 8x wont really hit the performance at all and I prefer to have it running cool.

So when you go into device manager and both cards are installed , only one card shows up in device manager ? Why don't you want to put the second video card in the third pci-e slot ?

If this is the motherboard that you have , then you have a total of four pci-e slots and the ideal slots to use I think would be one and three. Then you put the sound card in the pci slot . If the concern is heat then either have a fan in the side pannel or at the end of the cards at the hdd rack so it blows into the end of the cards towards the rear of the case. There are always some mods that you can make inside the case , all it takes is a little imagination. If it were me I would be making every effort to put the cards in slots one and three so I could have 16x16.

well i have them in a Haf X case with 4 200mm fans( 1 side-in 1 front-in and 2 top-out and 1 140mm- out) so fans are not an issue. and i want the cards spaced as from my past experience on my asus crosshair v AM3+ board it almost reduced my temps by 1/2 and yes i checked device manager and it did not show up that's the first place i always look for everything.

just in case i did explain the layout i want properly i want one card in the first PCIe 16x slot at the top and one in the last PCIe 16X slot but that one runs at 8X with the sound card just above the the bottom card leaving about a 3/4" gap between the first card instead of the 1/8" gap.
