I have a "EVGA - 600W ATX 12V/EPS 12V 80 Plus Power Supply - Black" in my 2-year old PC which I built for my video editing. The current wattage used, according to PcPartPicker is 374 watts. I am thinking of upgrading to a GPU that uses 80 watts more, totalling 450+ watts.

Someone suggested that my current PSU is a piece of junk and would not handle the requirement even though it was advertised as 600 watts.

I would like to hear from some of you and tell me that it is OK or that I need to replace it with a better one when and if I upgrade.

Thanks.

Hi ssal. 374 watts for a R7 3800X / B450 chipset / GTX 1060 6GB sounds like an overly generous estimate. I bet that a Kill-a-Watt meter should display a much lower figure; at least by 100 watts.

The 3800X has a TDP of 105 watts; even with PBO enabled, it shouldn't consume too much beyond that. A GTX 1060 6GB has a 120 watt TDP, and the chipset wattage is most likely insignificant; I couldn't find the exact figure online.

What GPU are you upgrading to? RTX 3060 Ti? Regardless, you're probably fine wattage-wise. While I personally wouldn't have bought that lower tier PSU, since you already own it, I'd recommend that you buy your new GPU and try it out with your existing PSU. With that said, you never mentioned which video editing software that you use, but you may wish to peruse the articles below. It might be helpful to you figuring out how to get the best return on your upgrade dollar.
