Is my PSU good enough?

Solution

Don't worry about 1 vs 2 vs 4 rails, it's insignificant and very complicated to understand, all you need to know is that a) a PSU's efficiency rating is the best indicator of quality (usually) anything that's not 80+ is trash, 80+ half and half, 80+ bronze your usually okay b) get a unit with enough power, 600w is good for a 7970 and c) the more efficient a unit is the less power is being wasted, wasted power turns into heat so 80+ gold units will run...
thank you for your replies, its just that i was getting ready to buy a Corsair CX600 600W when i just wanted another opinion. iv asked this question a few times and some people have said that it would damage my card and some have said different. as i know hardly anything about psu's, how do i know it will be enough and how do i know it wont damage my card, i am just asking this for some reassurance! thanks!

Corsair CX uses low quality components, a PSU doesn't really damage anything until it blows up, your unit does good in the tests I've seen done on it and has a decent efficiency rating.
If you haven't bought it yet these are what I recommend to most people: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207014

what about power? it has 18a on 4x 12v rails, will that be enough? will my 2 PCI-E connectors hand out the power needed? sorry for the question but i just need to know so i either save myself money or go towards a new psu, and i know for sure i wont crossfire or overclock. cheers!

You'll find that if you tax your PSU above it's maximum threshold the computer 'should' shutdown. A quality unit will have safety mechanisms in place so your other hardware doesn't cook. The current Power supply should be fine, it may run a bit hotter when you are doing something graphically intensive but I doubt you'll have any problems.

I would sit with the current power supply, see how it handles the upgrades and if it's running too hot (fan speed way up) or the computer shuts down randomly then look at a new one :)

Thank you! its just that im noob and dont understand what i read most of the time, for example just a second ago i was reading about how the 7970ghz editon needs 550w minimum and 31a, what i didnt understand was that mine only has 18a per rail, so how would my psu pull out the amps< do the rails combine? i dont know, would you mind describing it to me? if not thanks for your reply and advise!

Basically the rails combine to add up to the total system power.
When you go to AMD's or Nvidia website, the recommended power requirements assumes your running the trashiest PSU known to man.
