Hello,

I am thinking about upgrading my system. However, i'm not sure if I also need to upgrade my PSU as well.

Current Build:

ASUS r9-280 (non x version)
AMD Fx-6300
EVGA 750w Bronze Certified PSU
ASUS M5A97 R2.0 MOBO
and other unimportant things.

Future Build:

MSI GTX 970
Intel i5 Haswell 4590
EVGA 750w Bronze Certified PSU
MSI H97 Gaming 3
and other unimportant things.

Any help is appreciated. I would assusme i'd be fine since my power draw on my gpu would go up, but at the same time the power draw on my cpu will go down since intel is more efficient.

Why would your GPU draw go up? The 280 is a ~200W card while the 970 is rated at ~150W. You should see lower power draws on everything.

750W units are meant to power dual GPU systems. With only one card you'll be fine. You should have actually bought a smaller one.

Their 750w PSU is carry over from their current build. For an all AMD system, 750w is a safe choice.

125W CPU + 300W GPU + 50W RoS = <500W. I will always voice that 750W PSUs are poor choices when running single GPU system. Neither the 280 or the 970 is a 300W GPU as well. PSUs should be bought for the system they will be running. Not what if or maybe perhaps. When I bought my 7950 I was thinking about going with CF and bought a 750W. Then I ended up going with the single card and had to buy another PSU. Just trying to help out here.

I have been running a 1st gen TX750 for quite awhile. I am currently running single card, but have had dual GPU setups in the past. It actually wouldn't have been enough for me, had I decided to CF another HD 7970. Also, if you want a modular or semi modular PSU, the Evga 750w B2 is the best one for the money, right now. The only one worth considering is a Seasonic 550w gold, for the same price. Spending the same amount on a 550w as I can a quality 750w, just seems wrong to me. I would rather have the headroom, for upgrades as well. When I buy a PSU, I buy one that will last me a long time, and cover any foreseeable upgrades. Considering I bought mine six years ago, almost, I would say I did good with my purchase.
