Is my RAM dead?

Suddenly my pc is not reading one of the 2 RAM sticks
I had 4gb DDR2 ram (2x2 gb sticks)
Suddenly it shows only 2gb ram memory.
I removed both the sticks and tried one at a time. One stick would boot up the system from both slots.
The other stick would not boot from both slots but there are NO BEEPS.
So is it dead?

If you invert them, does it still read 2 gb or won't boot.
If no boot = one stick of ram is dead, if boots, the one slot is defective. Need to change motherboard.

Yes, those tests show that one stick is dead.
