The 6870 is still a fairly relevant card. What games and/or circumstances does this drastic change in FPS occur? Sometimes something as simple as looking at something complicated or looking out over a big landscape can drop your fps significantly.

So you're saying that you basically only get a good frame rate when you're standing still and not doing anything? From a sheer GPU standpoint, it almost makes sense since the GPU has to work harder to render the environment when your view is constantly changing... but for an issue as severe as this, my first instinct would be to check out what you have running in the background. Make sure you are 100% malware free, aren't running anything at all in the background, your registry in clean, and you've uninstalled any unnecessary software and drivers on your system. Finally, do a complete uninstall of your current GPU drivers, download fresh new ones from AMD's web site, and install those.

Unless you're seeing similar fluctuations in your CPU speed and you've checked off all these steps and the problem persists, it could be a GPU/motherboard issue.

is there a program to chek cpu usage while gaming

That's normal. Intel SpeedStep automatically throttles the CPU's speed depending on activity. In the BIOS, you could try disabling SpeedStep to see if it affects the problems.

Right, right sorry--- got this thread mixed up with another :p

AMD uses a similar system to Speed Step although I don't know what it's called these days. It used to be called Cool and Quiet, but I don't know if that's changed. Regardless, the option should still be somewhere in the BIOS to disable. Alternatively, you can go into Power Management settings in windows and enable performance mode, which should force the CPU to run at its maximum speed constantly.

Might be that your GPU is going, then. Did you enable performance mode in Windows power settings?

I have no idea, I never install the software that comes with peripherals (except mouse/headset calibration) because it generally doesn't do anything that Windows can't do. I was talking about Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options, and setting the profile to Performance Mode.

In that case, It's gotta be the hardware. Like any processor, a GPU's performance can degrade over time depending on its usage and build quality. When that happens, it can exhibit all kinds of strange behaviors.

Well... as I implied, probably the graphics card. Are you in a situation where you can buy a replacement and return it if the problem isn't fixed (I realize most people don't have a convenient way to do this)?

The best options are either the AMD Radeon HD 7850 or the nVidia GTX 650 Ti Boost.

If you can swing a little more cash, the GTX 760 is a fantastic value right now.
