So I recently upgraded to Win 10 on my Seagate Barracuda 160 GB HDD and eventually it caused problems with my system and I was too tired to fix it. Luckily I still have my 6 year-old Dell Optiplex GX620 with a 160 GB Samsung HD161GJ on it which is still intact so I installed Windows 7 Pro SP1 on it and rigged the HDD to my custom built PC. Later this week while dad was using the PC, he started to hear a weird buzzing noise on the system. It was noticeable even when the system is on idle and it gets louder when playing games or using chrome. (games are separately located on my other Seagate Barracuda 500 GB HDD and chrome is on the 160 GB) Is this a sign of my HDD dying? Idk how to tell but it is starting to worry me.

Hi there NDDU Julius BSIT,

I agree with scout_03. The first thing you really need to do is to back up the data stored on the drive.
After that, you can just test it: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

Observe the SMART report and look for pending/reallocated and uncorrectable sectors.
If it turns out that the HDD is in a good condition, then you will need to troubleshoot the other components.

Ok so it has 1 reallocated sector count...is it bad?

Could you provide a screenshot of the SMART report? Just upload it to an image hosting website and post the link.

Even though it is just a single bad sector(if we assume that this is the case), the HDD is consider unreliable. Bad sectors would eventually continue to appear. My advice would be not to keep important data stored on the drive.

Apart from that, you can make sure that the sound comes from the HDD. You can open up the computer case and try to locate where the sound comes from. In case it is the HDD, it will not hurt to attach it with different cables to another SATA port.

Yeah, it seems there's just a single bad sector. Even though the HDD is considered to be unreliable, the HDD could last for quite a while.

I'm not sure that a single bad sector could cause a buzzing sound though. Try to see if the sound comes from the HDD. Do some cables/ports management as well.
