So today i finally folded and decided to buy a 1440p monitor, it is an Alienware AW2723DF 1440p 280Hz, im a pc newbie and just wanted to make sure that my system is capable of running games such as GTA, Forza etc at 1440p with stable performance.

Specs:
GPU - RX 7800XT
CPU - Ryzen 7 5800x3D
RAM - Corsair Vengeance 32GB @3600Mhz
MOBO - ASUS TUF GAMING B550M PLUS WIFI II

Is my system capable of 1440p 280hz?
Nowhere near it.

It won't do even half of 280 Hz/FPS.

So, 1440p 280 Hz monitor is complete waste of money.
Heck, it is even waste if you'd have current king of GPUs: RTX 4090, since even RTX 4090 won't do over 200 FPS on 1440p let alone 280 FPS.

Yeah i already knew that my system isnt capable of getting 240fps except maybe in games like cs2, rocket league etc. I just like the smoothness. I probably shouldve just reworded the title to ''Is my system capable of 1440p''. So do you think it is disregarding the 280hz part

See his chart above. Looks like about 120ish fps. Which if you’re above 60 that should be good. If you want to gain a few extra fps switch the game to high from ultra. Many games the differences are very small if you notice them at all.

Truth be told some of these “280hz” of above monitors are almost a gimmick. They say the human eye can only see 60fps though you can sometimes perceive smoothness. But for a while the magic number was 144hz, 165hz and so on. Kind of like these companies say hey if we slap the word gamer on something people will buy it even though out lower product gives them 99% of the features and performance. Point is you may never, at least for a long time, saturate 280hz. Just dial in your settings see if it performs smoothly and enjoy.

I just like the smoothness.
For me, ~40 FPS is enough for good gameplay. ~60 FPS is better. 80 FPS and more - can't tell a diff.

For years, i had 60 Hz monitor. Few years ago, i upgraded my monitor to 144 Hz, alongside with GPU that can push 144 FPS on 1080p. And i couldn't tell much diff between 60 FPS and 144 FPS. Games seemed a bit smoother but other than that, there were no drastic changes to the gameplay smoothness, at least not for me. Then again, i'm casual player and my eyes aren't trained for fast-paced FPS shooters.

Essentially everything above 144/165 Hz is gimmick. One may think that they see 200/300 FPS but in actuality, they don't.

Monitor refresh rates are going up and up, so that monitor manufacturers can ask more money for "higher numbers". E.g like this Dell 25", 1080p, 500 Hz display, at 830 bucks,

Even review of that 500 Hz panel concluded that the monitor is not worth it:
