Is now the time to upgrade from Sandy Bridge?

I have been holding off upgrading my stock Sandy Bridge i5 2500k, which I have had for coming up to five years, for the past few months, waiting to see what Kaby Lake had to offer. Now, after looking at it, there doesn't seem to much difference over Skylake apart from the potential of higher clock speeds and a few minor changes. I was wondering however, is it now worth upgrading from an i5 2500k which is sitting at stock due to my motherboard not being stable at overclocking?. I currently use my system mainly for gaming but also programming, word processing and in the near future basic photo editing.

Currently, I am considering an i7 7700k but also have been looking at the i7 6800k and the i7 5820k aswell. Haven't got a fixed budget but looking around the £1000 mark if I decided to upgrade but don't need a case, powersupply, graphics card (have an MSI 970) or hard drives. Is it now worth upgrading from an i5 2500k or is best to wait for the next generation of processors?

if you cant overclock then yes

pretty significant upgrade to a i7 7700k

Thats what i thought, don't think I would consider upgrading if I could overclock my i5 2500k. Only other thought is would it be worth while upgrading to a 1070 or 1080 from my 970 for gaming at 1440p?

1070, sweet spot for 1440p quite a bit faster than a 970 which has mediocre performance at that resolution

the 1080 isnt worth the price premium unless you have a 100hz + monitor

OK, great. Came up with this build. Don't really want to go with a water cooler since I don't particularly trust them. Is there any changes you would make?
