Is overclocking permanent for the cpu ?

Hello i want to overclock my intel cpu q9550 on hp desktop workstation xw4600 which does not allow me to over clock it. So i was wondering if i can overclok it on some one else system and than put the processor back in my system
And if not possible then how can i achieve it on my desktop.

No, those settings are not written to the CPU, those settings would be in the BIOS on the motherboard.

No that would not work at all the overclock settings are controlled by the motherboard. So if you overclock it on one motherboard then put itt into another it would just go back to stock.

I dont know if you can usually those stock hp motherboards dont allow it or just dont even give you the option. What motherboard do you have i might be able to find out for sure.

I don't know about the board but it got some intel chipset on it Intel X38 Express North Bridge/ICH9R South Bridge my work station model is hp xw4600 may be you can find out about what board it has
