I've strayed away from onboard audio in recent years and went with creative. I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not the ICH9R southbridge had a good enough on board audio solution, or should i go ahead and get another offering.

If you have the money, would be better off with a card. I've been looking at these

There is a Claro as well for about $15 less that doesn't include the advanced analogue. The AuzeTech gets the best reviews closely followed by the Claro. If money is tight, the bluegears would work. I don't game but listen to a lot of music. There are some good reviews of these cards if you google them

I also listen to music alot, but I also game quite a bit. From what I've read the cards you reccomend kill creative in everything but gaming.

From the reviews my impression is that they don't really significantly lag Creative in gaming. Buying audio is really tough if you can't actually listen to it be it cards, amp/receivers, or especially speakers given how subjected audio is even at the high end. On the upside, higher end audio is a lot cheaper than high end video
