Is "page has been printed" notification possible?

I use a home network and my laptop is downstairs and my printer upstairs. It
is shared by my laptop and desktop. Sometimes when I tell something to print
from my laptop it does not. Unless I climb the stairs and go up to see I
cannot be assured my pages have been printed. 95% of the time they have
been, but that 5% is sometimes really frustrating. Sometimes it may also be
out of paper and I don't know it.

I have an HP 6L Laser printer and use XP.

There must be something I can do so I can see that it has been printed.

Use XP's Remote Desktop application and log on to your desktop from your
laptop. You will see (on your laptop screen) the desktop screen from your
upstairs machine and have full access to your upstairs computer as if you
were sitting in front of it. You can then double click the printer to check
if there is an output problem or if the queue is cleared.

Short of that , put a webcam up that hovers over your printer and monitor it
from your laptop with a webbrowser!
