Is PCI or AGP 8x the better way to go?

Can anyone either provide me a link to, or explain the relative merits of, PCI and AGP video cards? I am a student with very little in the way of funding and an ASUS P5PE-VM motherboard (http://www.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=k3h0ZFVu9Lo1dUvk) which has an AGP 8x slot and a PCI 1 slot. I know the proper thing to do is to just buy a new system, but that is not possible with my budget. I do no gaming at all, so that is not a concern. Does it matter which type of video card I use?

Why are you buying this motherboard? Are you using it in a new system build or just replacing the one you have? If the former, you should be buying a pci-express board--they are not expensive. If the latter, what are your system's specs? There might be better, yet still compatible, options.
