[SOLVED] Is ram capacity relevant when upgrading?

Hey everybody, I want to upgrade my ram because 8gb just isn't cutting it anymore. I currently have 2x4Gb Corsair vengeance pro 1600 and I was going to buy another set of the same memory but while I was shopping around I managed to find a 16gb set of the same 1600 vengeance pro for only 20 pound more. This got me thinking, if I install the 16gb set alongside my current 8gb set will it work. Other than the capacity both sets are identical so theoretically I think it should work, has anybody tried this before?

Solution
"has anyone tried this before?"

We see that here at least a dozen times per day.

Buy the 16GB.
Remove the existing 8GB, and install the 16GB.
Run it.
Later, try adding the 8GB.
If it works, great. If it fails, you still have 16GB.

Having 24GB is only a benefit if you are actually running out at the 16GB level. Otherwise, that extra capacity is just sitting there, unused.
