Hi all,

Just a quick post to wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new
year!
I know it’s somewhat early but I’ll be rushed off my feet over the next
few weeks, so I thought I’d get everything in order early :)
This year has been a right bitch for me, one problem after another so my
shooting has suffered considerably. I did manage a stalking trip on
Thursday afternoon. I watch three Fallow does feeding on some forestry
commission land, which is adjacent to the land I was stalking. I had
magical moment when a dog from one of the other farms decided that I was
a suitable target to test his barking on; the effect on the deer was
amazing. I sat and watched the eldest doe take a keen interest in the
dog. She gathered all her courage and start barking back, a memory that
will stay with me for all time.
Monday will see me start my new job as a pest controller for a large
company. The job pays well and I have the use of the company van, which
will come in useful and take the pressure off my aging motor car.
Over the last five months I’ve been working in the meat trade but the
job had to go, lo paid and frankly moving 300kg of silverside a day has
a negative effect on ones back muscles.
So guys in a nut shell, have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

John

Good luck matey. I expect that like those of us who have to go out
every day to earn enough you'll be online as and when you can.

Well, I wish you a happy time and better sport next year. I have
enjoyed your posts which are always reasoned and sensible.

I'm sorry, but this time of year continues to be humbug to me!
For years I used to get a card every Christmas from someone and
I still haven't a clue who it was. It would have made more sense
if he had enclosed a £1 note (we still have them in Scotland) as
it would have cost him the same and given me more pleasure.

My landowner decided he would like to shoot the pond last night.
There's a moon, no wind, low tide, and probably too early in
the year but we got a couple of duck and saw about twenty. Oh
well, he was delighted at that so I suppose that's OK.

I have had more fun this year with my male goshawk, the
pointers, and the spaniel, than I think I have had in any
previous season. I don't know what the bag is to date as I don't
keep records but individual flights are permanently burnt into
my brain. Got to go. The hawk is calling which means he is ready
to hunt!<G>

Glad to hear things are looking up for you,
John, it's about time you had a decent break.

Also, the customary good wishes to those who do
celebrate Christmas, and a Happy New Year to those who
- like Derry and myself - are somewhat less than
enamoured of the whole bloody ritual ;-)

Have you got the torch ready for the early evening deliveries yet?

*Early* evening? I'm strapping my sleeping bag
behind the saddle. If I'm not finished by midnight
I'll curl up under a hedge somewhere ;-)

I seriously thought about taking my bag in to work when I worked lates
at the MLO, the problem was you could easily end up sharing the bag
room with a guvnor or two sleeping off a session at the local
hostelry. :-(

I remember I used to delay going out on delivery because of a
notoriously dark staircase on my round - we could never get stores to
issue us with torches, they said the streetlights in London made it
like daylight. These days of course it is mid-day by the time we get
there.
