I have been looking on Ebay (and elsewhere) for a copy of Super Smash
Brothers Melee, which until today I knew nothing about. Is it a good
fighting game, or is it more of a mission type game with fights in it, or is
it something completely different? Ultimately it seems to be an expensive
game even used, so is it worth the cash to get it?

Short answer: yes it's worth it.
Somewhat longer answer: HELL yes it's worth it.

I wouldn't call it a "serious" figher, like Mortal Kombat or Street
Figher 2(thousand). It's a great party game, though.

Best game I own. Incredibly fun fighting game, many many items that pop
up, unlockable characters up the wazoo, lots of customization options.
There are missions, but they're chiefly about fighting some character or
set of characters, except for a couple that are about running fast or
breaking targets.

It's $20 new now, isn't it? I thought they dropped the price a while
ago. Regardless, it's worth cover price, imho. I played it for eighty
hours just to unlock everything, before I ever played it multiplayer.

It has an adventure mode which combines some very rudimentary
platform-style levels with fighting action, but it also has a
straight-fighting mode. It is the only fighting game I have ever liked,
and I have really tried to like other fighters like Street Fighter II
and Soul Calibur II, but the alleged "depth" in those games went over my
head I guess. I think an action game should be about skill and
reflexes, not about memorizing arbitrary button combos, which is what
all other fighting games do. SSBM has a very different style of combat
but once you learn it it is very intuitive and simple.

But should you buy it? If you have somebody to play with who wants to
play, yes, it's a great multiplayer game (not fifty dollars good though,
more like twenty). If you're going to be playing by yourself, you will
not get as much out of it, although there are plenty of mini-games and
missions, etc.

It's the best game ever made. Top of my list, even above the best of my
beloved Zelda and Metroid games. It's a fighting game with tons of options
and ways to play. And it's the best gamer's party game out there--I say
"gamer's" party game because it's not so much fun with amateurs or
non-gamers if you're good at it.
It's a tough game to describe well, because it's unique. There's nothing
out there like it, although there are a couple of superficially similar (and
lousy) games like Power Stone and Kung Fu Chaos.

Awesome game! guard it during partys though, mine got ruined *Damn
Sratches* from 20 odd people mishandling the disk it's so popular...

It's expesive because it's quality. Not like Sony or Microsoft, which
are out to rob you...

Not in my opinion, but a lot of people like it. Comparing it to a real
fighter is like comparing chess to tic tac toe. If a fighter is what you're
looking for, it's not. If you're looking for a Mario Party type game,
that's probably it.

Girls and little kids seem to like it as well.

Nope. It's 29.99... Nintendo actually took it /off/ Players Choice to keep
the price up :)

Actually there are two (or was it three?) price points for Player's Choice
games. $29.99 is one of them.

I'll take your word for it. We got a notice a few months ago stating that
/all/ players choice titles would now be 19.99
