Is t.co safe?

Hi, I was on twitter, and I noticed that all the links seem to go to a t.co website, like a URL shortener. I'm wondering is t.co official, and is it safe from viruses and malware? Like I clicked a few and they went to official sites and sites I trust, but is the t.co part safe?

Though for some links the 'short' version is longer than the original...
