Is that a cheap PSU?

Hi,

I'd like to know if this PSU:

High Power 300W HPC-300-102
13A on the +12V

...is enough for an AGP X800XL.

Same here,

I've never ID'd that particular brand, and I've seen some pretty whacked out brands (mucho past retail experience, new brand tested every week).

A GOOD 300W PSU might be work (universally recognizable brand), but this is likely a value brand 300W PSU (it won't run near 300W constantly, may not even peak at 300 without shutting down).

If you have more than one HDD, CD-ROM, or have a high-end CPU, this ain't gonna cut it.

Although it _may_ work at first, it will most definitely fail over a few months if it's run maxed out.

A good 300w PSu will run the system fine.

my friend uses a lame ass raid max 450w PSU with 14amps on the 12v and he runs an X800GTO w/ a P4 3.2 HT. and i think 1 HDD and 2 opticals.

That's my actual PSU this is why I am asking, it came with my case.

The rest of my config is P4 2.8 HT, 2sticks of ddr400 ram, 2opticals 1hd.

Is it harmful to the hardware if the PSU fails at some point?

possibly. if it blows then it could take hardware if its fairly new and u have the cash i would get a new PSU. i fu cna scare 50 bucks i;d go for a Fortron 500w PSU.

Looks like a standard cheapo power supply. 13 amps on the 12v is only 156 watts so half the capacity of this is spent on the 5 and 3 volt rails. Anyway if your rig runs flaky you might want to replace the PSU.

By any chance, is this PSU from an HP computer? My PC used to be an HP, and it had that exact PSU. It was running a P4 540, 1GB RAM, one HDD, two optical drives, an X600 and a SoundBlaster. The CPU and mobo fried after a couple months, but I don't think that the PSU caused it. More likely the poorly designed case. But enough bitching about HP.

13A on the 12V rail is not enough for an X800XL; it might work, but you risk overloading and blowing the PSU. If the PSU blows, you do risk damage to the other hardware.

If your computer is an HP, I recommend getting a new case, along with a quality power supply with at least 20A on the 12V rail. The 12V rail is what's powering the CPU, hard drive, graphics card, and some other stuff, so it's important to have a lot of continous, steady power on the 12V. Also, look for at least a 400W PSU.

how do u guys fry these systems?


i've got 2 old system.

1 is an HP vectra, maybe from 1998, 1.8GHz P4 wiliamette. 768mb RAM. MX440 AGP.

and a 2nd one is a Vaio. 2GHz P4 Northwood. 512MB RAM. MX440 PCI...maybe 5 years old.

My computer is not an hp, it's a full custom-build, though at the time I chose the parts I wasn't aware of all the details. So I'm replacing the video card now and yeah, I'll do as you reccommend, I'll get a new PSU too just for security.

It might work, depending on the CPU. It should have enough 12v power for a single-core Athlon 64, but not a Prescott P4 or a dual core, with that video card.
