Is the 1070 worth it?

Hey everyone!
Just wondering whether or not the 1070 is worth the buy for a first CPU (For Gaming, Digital art)

Any tips or help will be EXTREMELY helpful!!!

What ? If its even as fast as a 970 my opinion is right, its overkill for some if not most, hence why i asked what he wanted to play, Also if he has a bad CPU it will likely hold a 1070 back, HENCE why i asked about hes current CPU

Given the disappointment that is the 1080, I'd wait for an actual review / retail prices before saying your opinion is right. What if in the real world, the 1070 5% faster but 30% more expensive than the 970 for example? Most of the 1080's gains are for VR processing, if you aren't planning a headset purchase, there's not that much to get excited about - it's an evolution in performance, not revolution. I for one am not expecting a step-change in performance / value unless the 1070 comes in at a very low price point.

As much as that is not going to be the case, you are right, i was basing my opinion off the 970, just wanted to know his specs / intentions !

You are hopefully correct - I'm just a little cautious as the '3x the performance for half the power' headlines for the 1080 turned out to be drivel unless you are in VR. In some ways I'm glad that my 970 hasn't been instantly obsoleted, but mainly I'm pretty annoyed that the pre-release hype was just hype.

If the 1070 really is faster than a 980ti as the hype suggests, then yes I totally agree with you - but if as I suspect it's a bit faster than a 970 for monitors and a *lot* faster in VR only, then that's a different decision process.

I was looking at a i5-6500 or 6600K, full 1080p

+1 to this comment. If the Polaris 10 cards (Rx 480/Rx 480x) achieve Fury-level performance for the price of $280 and lower TDP, then the Polaris 10 cards are going to be the cards to own for 1080p. We'll find out in a couple days. I don't think $380 for a 1070 is worth it, but then again I bought a GTX 970 FTW+ for $380 and it's a great card. But two years have passed and GPU progress has outpaced games, so I think spending $380 today is silly for a regular 1080p rig. In a couple days, we should have a pretty good idea what to expect from AMD. The NDA for the AMD cards is June 29th, so we will really be able to tell then where the market stands.

theres your answer. i would say yes its worth it at its price, it performs on average 5-10fps faster than a gtx 980 reference card, pretty much between a 980 and 980ti generally, and in certain titles well above the 980ti. if your already on a gtx 970/r9 290/390 then dont upgrade, wait to see what the 1080ti(if it comes out which im sure it will, my opinion.) or amd's vega.

and to reply to the post above, the 1080 is in no way a dissapointment, it introduced many new and very very useful features into the gpu world, that alone in my opinion is a well deserved applaud, great for VR/multi monitor setups, and another step in the right direction for 2160p gaming, just waiting to see how big of a jump the next generation is going to be.

I think people need to understand that nVidia was not going to go balls to the walls with the 1080 because if they did, it would leave them no expand ability for future GPU's.

Hard to say currently if 1070 is worth it. AMD has livestream today where they announce the Polaris line. Polaris 10 could be direct competitor to the 1070. It depends on what retail price ends up being, performance, how good drivers are, what your use-case is etc.

Retailers need to get rid of current stock, I would not expect the new cards to be cheap (Retailers dont want to sell their current stock at a loss). Maybe the MSRP price is true in the US but in rest of the world it will be 1-200 US more, more likely.

As it turns out, now we have some data I'm much more interested in the 1070 than the 1080. I reiterate my disappointment in the 1080 - it was touted as 2-3x faster than anything ever when the small print is in VR only. That is down to very poor marketing decisions granted, but it still leaves a tacky 'not as good as advertised' feeling with the 1080. I know it's an excellent card and a real step forward, but it was billed in the build-up as even more.

the '70 though? annihilated my expectations - if the price stays anywhere near the RRP, that is as much of a disruptive force as the original 970 launch was, very impressive, I'm looking forward to a Strix version...

Spending $400 on a GPU two years ago made sense. Not so much now. So the answer is no, it's not worth it contrary to what other people are saying. Nvidia has jacked prices up so high this time. I'm not an AMD fanboy - I have a GTX 970 in my rig right now. If you are buying your first GPU, don't blow $400. A $220 RX 480 or a $230 GTX 970 will work just fine and serve you for many years to come. Mind you these cards won't MAX every game out there, but it will come dang close.
