Is the 12v ATX necessary when there is a 24 pin?

I am building a FX-8350 computer and have a ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 motherboard. It has been awhile since I've built a system and I noticed a 24 pin motherboard power connector and a 12v 4 pin on the motherboard. I have a 24 pin which I connected, my corsair power supply did not have a 12v 4 pin so I left it off. I powered on the computer but nothing happened. I'll upload a picture when I get home, but I was wondering if the 4 pin was needed?

Solution
The 8 pin EPS cable will be braided and not flat. It should be there coming out of the PSU at the same point as the 24pin cable. Check it again because as I said all Corsair PSUs have an EPS connector. Also refer to my link to the Corsair product page and you will see what it looks like on the CX600M itself.

The 8pin EPS should not fit to the GPU and if you have one that is braided going to the GPU that is incorrect. Both of the cables going to the GPU should be flat and have to be connected to both the PSU and GPU.

Dang, I should have paid more attention. I'm betting I'll have to get a new power supply. I have a 600 watt Corsair and it doesn't have the cable.

Is it a CX600? Because all Corsair PSUs have the 4 pin EPS connector:

Yours probably has the 8 pin but you can split it into two 4 pins:

@jimmysmitty - ok, I will check that out. I spent about a year buying the parts for this as they would come on sale or be on special. Everything "seemed" to go together well. Although, I was very surprised to NOT see any type of video out on the motherboard making a video card a "must'. I don't have the manual for the power supply anymore; do the cables come apart/split easily?

It's ALIVE! Thanks again everyone, you really helped me a bunch!

Hi fox1x

As your PSU comes without you need adapter cable 4 pin molex to 4 pin EPS cable. Take a look.
